Our History

Cedar Grove Friends Meeting had its beginning in the spring of 1868 when a small group started meeting together in a school house in Woodland, under the oversight of an established Friends meeting in nearby Rich Square. A lot was procured in that same year, and a Meeting House was built on the present site. From 1873 until 1936, Cedar Grove Friends and Rich Square Friends took turns hosting their monthly meetings for church business. Near the end of 1936, the meeting in Rich Square was discontinued, leaving Cedar Grove Friends with the title, Rich Square Monthly Meeting.

Present-day Rich Square Monthly Meeting is part of North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends (Conservative), one of the smallest of the modern-day groupings of Quakers. About 500 individuals belong to the eight monthly meetings in the yearly meeting: Rich Square, Durham, Fayetteville, Greenville, Wilmington, Friendship (Greensboro), West Grove (Alamance County), and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
